Ant 'n Dec get back in the Grove

By SARA NATHAN
TV Editor
and COLIN ROBERTSON
Published: Today

GEORDIE lads Ant and Dec had an emotional homecoming — with a surprise trip to a real-life Byker Grove.
The I’m A Celebrity presenters went back to Tyneside to visit a Comic Relief-funded social group for young carers.
The trip brought back plenty of memories for Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly who made their names in the early Nineties playing PJ and Duncan on the BBC1 kids show about a Geordie youth club.
On their visit they were visibly moved when they went to the home of 14-year-old Simone who cares for her wheelchair-bound mum Debbie, who has multiple sclerosis.
When Simone isn’t at school and her dad is working late, the responsibility rests solely on her.
As well as doing the housework and cooking, the teen also helps with her mum’s injections and pills.
Poignant
The Geordie lads, both 33, then went to see how Gateshead Crossroads Caring for Carers gives Simone the break she needs away from her responsibilities.
Dec said: “For a 14-year-old kid, Simone really does shoulder a lot in her house but she helps her mum without complaining.
“The project really is important, offering kids like Simone support and a break from their caring duties.”
The group helps kids who struggle to juggle being a carer with school work. Some youngsters can end up sick and stressed out, as well as missing out on time with their friends.
Simone said: “I get to meet other young carers who are in the same situation, which has really helped.
“I have made some great friends and know that I don’t have to worry about my mum when I get time off, especially because she often comes with me and we have fun together.”
One person in eight in the UK is a carer, a total of six million. In Gateshead, with a population of 200,000, about 25,000 people are unpaid carers.
A source close to the boys said: “Ant and Dec loved their day but it took its toll. It was very emotional.
“Meeting Simone just brought home exactly what this group was for.
“For Ant, it was especially poignant because he grew up in a single parent family with his mum and sister and pitched in every day at home.
“And it brought home memories of where they started on TV, so of course it was emotional.”
During their visit, Ant and Dec met a group of young carers and their families who were enjoying an activity day provided by the project.
The lads got stuck in and chatted to the carers, families and project workers while being roped into making pizzas and cakes with the kids.
The lads presented a Comic Relief cheque for £10,000, money which will allow the young carers and their families to do activities together such as trips to the cinema or going fishing. It will also give the kids a break away from stress and worry.
Ant said: “We had such a great day seeing how the money that people give to Comic Relief really does help young carers like Simone. It’s really nice to see it at work in our neck of the woods too.
“Cash raised for Comic Relief really is spent all over the UK, helping people who really need it.”
