H1N1 flu virus is a strain of the influenza virus that usually affects pigs, but which may also make people sick. H1N1 flu virus has been reported around the world since spring 2009, and the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared it a pandemic influenza virus. Since the H1N1 flu virus is a new, or novel, influenza virus, people will likely have no natural immunity to protect against it. International experts are concerned that this strain could spread quickly.
To date in Canada, the H1N1 flu has been similar in severity to a typical seasonal flu. In most cases, suspected cases have not required hospitalization and patients have been sent home and advised to follow the normal treatment for flu.
TheThe H1N1 flu virus has had a greater infection rate among younger people. Pregnant women, young children under five and people with chronic conditions such as heart or kidney disease, diabetes, asthma and chronic lung disease, suppressed immune systems, neurological disorders, liver disease, blood disorders or severe obesity are more likely to suffer complications if they catch the H1N1 flu virus. While pregnant women are not more likely to catch H1N1 flu, they are more likely to suffer complications, such as pneumonia and severe respiratory distress, if they do contract the virus.
